Okoume

Gaboon, Gaboon Mahogany, African Mahogany

Aucoumea klaineana.

Central African region

98-131 ft (30-40 m) tall, 3-65ft (1-1.5 m) trunk diameter

21.8-28 lbs/ft3 (350 to 450 kg/m3)

Okoume timber exhibits minimal shrinkage during the drying process, which contributes to its stability and suitability for applications where dimensional stability is important, such as in plywood production and furniture making.

Typically has a pale to medium pinkish-brown color when freshly cut, which may darken slightly upon exposure to light and air.

The grain of Okoume timber is generally straight, though it can occasionally exhibit a slight interlocking pattern. It has a fine to medium texture, which contributes to its smooth and even appearance. The wood’s texture is uniform, with a relatively consistent grain pattern throughout the material.

The endgrain pores in Okoume are diffuse-porous, meaning that the pores are evenly distributed throughout the growth rings. These pores are generally small and uniform in size, with small, evenly distributed pores and fine vessels.

It is not known for its natural resistance to decay and rot. It is considered moderately durable when exposed to the elements and is susceptible to decay if not properly protected. However, Okoume can be treated with preservatives or finishes to improve its resistance to decay and extend its lifespan, especially in outdoor applications or high-moisture environments.

No characteristic odor.
